Blue Growth. An expanding role for GI & GIS in the marine and maritime sectors

‘Blue Growth’ is the term for the European Commission’s long-term strategy to support sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors – sectors which already account for some 5.4 million jobs and almost €500 billion in revenue per annum. One of the challenges to ‘Blue growth’ remains the lack of coordination between the different policy areas and players in the marine and maritime sectors.
A Cadcorp conference held in 2015 discussed ways in which the greater use of geographic information and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can help improve coordination. Specifically, GIS’ potential to:
- take account of the interconnectivity between industries and human activities centred on the sea
- save time and money by enabling industry participants to share data and cooperate rather than work in silos
- help build close cooperation between decision-makers at all levels of government
- maintain public support for the commercial use of marine resources while ensuring the protection of the environment
