Air Quality GIS in Serbia
Cadcorp’s Serbian business partner, Mapsoft has completed a project with the Secretariat for Environmental Protection of the City of Belgrade to develop an Air Quality GIS.
The goal of the project was to establish a geo-information system as a central repository of data on the emission and immission of pollutants for the city. The system is used for decision making on issues relating to air quality; and also for monitoring both the effects of pollution and of attempts to mitigate against them.
The Air Quality GIS allows the user to:
- Collect and maintain a record of air quality data
- Model of the spread of pollutants in the air
- Generate air quality maps
Based on available data or data collected by MapSoft, spatial data analysis was performed to analyse the effect of:
- Traffic load on roads and streets
- Demographic data
- Chimneys of individual users
- Special buildings (hospitals, schools, preschool institutions)
After analysing the data, separate nitrogen dioxide models were produced for both the winter and summer periods. Distribution models for the area were obtained in accordance with the results obtained for models in cities within the ESCAPE project (European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects). As a result, prediction data for the concentration of nitrogen dioxide and the air quality index were obtained.
As part of the project, software applications were developed in order to generate a pollutant model. A desktop GIS solution (Map Modeller) was customised to run the applications, display the results of the analysis and to create maps and generate reports based on the model.
A web GIS application was developed to allow access to Air Quality GIS data to numerous system users.
