Press ReleasePreston City Council selects Cadcorp SIS and GeognoSIS software for its new corporate, web-based GIS Ability of Cadcorp software to read/display over 160 native data formats without additional-cost translators aids Preston’s migration from its existing GIS. Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that Preston City Council has selected Cadcorp SIS – Spatial Information System desktop and Cadcorp GeognoSIS web-based software for its new corporate GIS. Supplied in partnership with Supporta TerraQuest the Cadcorp software will replace existing GIS facilities used by the council. Cadcorp has supplied a number of licences of its 3D-enabled Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller desktop software for use by expert users. Cadcorp GeognoSIS has also been provided to allow access to GIS facilities by more casual users via the council’s corporate intranet. GeognoSIS also provides appropriate access for citizens to map-based data through the council’s web site via the Internet. Both software products fully implement Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)® interface specifications. In addition, Cadcorp is to provide managed services for the council’s new PostGIS open-source spatial database management system. This acts as the single source for all geospatial information used in the council’s desktop, intranet and Internet GIS systems. “Having a legacy GIS in place meant that data migration was a crucial factor in our decision-making process for acquiring a new, web-enabled GIS,” said Fraser Lomas, ICT development officer, Preston City Council. “Cadcorp SIS was the only software suite we saw that provides a simple drag and drop data migration solution together with the ability to read and display multiple GIS, CAD, graphic and database formats, on the fly, at no additional cost. In addition, it provides all the GIS functionality we need, within a familiar, easy-to-learn user interface. GeognoSIS meets our need for a dynamic, browser-based, full function GIS for use over the council’s intranet and one that can be integrated with our contact centre and other back-office systems. It also provides a toolset that enables us to expand the use of mapping on the Preston City Council web site for use by the general public.” Improved delivery of front-line services through systems integration, along with improved availability of mapping and associated information for the public via the council’s web site, both of which will enable it to fulfil various government requirements, are among the benefits that Preston City Council expects from its new Cadcorp SIS-based GIS. In addition, the implementation of a central spatial database will enable data to be consolidated, resulting in a reduction in spatial data storage from 130GB to 20GB, while the time taken to perform a common, day-to-day GIS task, such as adding a polygon, has been reduced from 10-15 minutes using the council’s existing, legacy GIS to just 1-2 minutes with the new Cadcorp SIS-based GIS. “We are delighted that Preston City Council has selected the Cadcorp SIS family of software in partnership with Supporta TerraQuest for its new corporate GIS,” said Mike O’Neil, managing director, Cadcorp. “We look forward to continuing to work with its ICT staff to help the council fulfil its aims.” About Supporta TerraQuest SPS is part of the Supporta plc Group and has offices in Glasgow, Birmingham, Bromsgrove, London, Oxford, Upper Heyford, Cardiff and Belfast.
