Press ReleaseCadcorp GeognoSIS web-based GIS software selected by University of Connecticut for state-wide online mapping project. Progeos, Cadcorp’s business partner for Northeastern USA, provides system development, implementation and support services: will demonstrate software at the CCM Convention in Hartford Connecticut, USA. Digital mapping and geographic information systems (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that its business partner for northeastern USA, Progeos, has been awarded a contract by the University of Connecticut for the supply and implementation of a web mapping system. The system is based on Cadcorp’s dynamic, web-based GIS software, GeognoSIS, and will be used in a state-wide online mapping project at the Map and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC). Based at the Homer Babbidge Library, MAGIC is one of the largest collections of map and geospatial data in northeastern USA. It is home to over 180,000 paper maps, thousands of atlases and is a repository for USGS publications. MAGIC’s digital map collection includes a growing collection of geo-referenced historical maps of Connecticut and 35,000 historical aerial photographs, including the popular 1934 historical aerial photography of Connecticut. “We are delighted to be working with the University of Connecticut and Cadcorp on implementing a web mapping solution for MAGIC based on Cadcorp GeognoSIS,” said Doug Morrill, founder and CTO, Progeos. “Cadcorp’s GeognoSIS allows Progeos to enable client data on the web in an extremely short amount of time. In the case of the University of Connecticut, MAGIC had been looking for an online mapping solution for several years and with GeognoSIS they were able to deliver their online mapping tool within a week of installation.” MAGIC’s online map viewer will enable users to view historical, geo-referenced geospatial data in the context of other geo-referenced information, including road, town and water body information. Users can make comparisons between different maps using special tools that allow them to compare changes over time across a variety of maps. They can also navigate easily to their location of interest and create maps of their selected data, which can be saved or printed. Although the web site is still at the beta testing stage, it has already generated over 2,000 unique visitors and 40,000 hits since August. UCONN’s MAGIC Online Viewer is at www.econmap.com. Progeos will be demonstrating Cadcorp SIS desktop and Cadcorp GeognoSIS web-based GIS software at the CCM Convention in Hartford, Connecticut on Wednesday 22nd October 2008.
