Press ReleaseNewtownabbey Borough Council selects Cadcorp SIS for its first GIS. Joins growing list of local authorities in Northern Ireland using Cadcorp’s GIS software to help deliver their e-Government objectives. Digital mapping and geographic information system (GIS) software developer Cadcorp has announced that Newtownabbey Borough Council has selected Cadcorp SIS – Spatial Information System – to provide the basis for the council’s first corporate-wide GIS. Newtownabbey now joins the growing list of local authorities in Northern Ireland, all of whom are using Cadcorp SIS to help them meet their e-Government objectives. Under the terms of the contract, Cadcorp is supplying a number of Cadcorp SIS Map Manager and Map Editor software licences and assisting the council in the implementation of the new system. Cadcorp SIS - Active Server Component (ASC) is also included to underpin future corporate GIS deployment across the authority’s intranet, and externally to citizens via the internet. In the initial phases of the project, Cadcorp SIS will be dynamically linked to existing departmental databases and third-party software applications in the council’s building control, environmental health, parks and development services departments. This will provide valuable GIS capabilities for the management, manipulation, reporting and presentation of location-based data relating to these departments’ activities. Cadcorp SIS will also be used to prepare and maintain a database of corporate land and property assets, so that related information and documents for individual items can be accessed from maps held by the council. In addition, it will be used to facilitate council development projects and property transactions. “Having determined that GIS technology had an important role to play in the council’s ability to meet its e-Government objectives, we invited the leading software developers to present their solutions to us. We selected Cadcorp SIS because we considered it to be both the easiest to use and the most cost-effective solution,” said William Dunbar, property services manager, Newtownabbey Borough Council. “Among the benefits that it brings us,” he added, “is the ability to bring together a wide range of departmental databases and to manage and present complex data in an easy-to-understand manner. These and other benefits will be brought to many more users, as we implement Cadcorp’s web-based mapping and GIS solution in the future.” “We are proud that, after evaluating Cadcorp SIS alongside other vendors’ software offerings, Newtownabbey Borough Council selected Cadcorp SIS as the basis of its corporate GIS,” said Mike O’Neil, managing director, Cadcorp. “We look forward to working with them to help them achieve their e-Government objectives.” About Newtownabbey Borough Council Newtownabbey is situated on the shore of Belfast Lough in Northern Ireland, reaching north from the City of Belfast and stretching up towards the Glens of Antrim.
