Press Release

Cadcorp SIS V6.1 ships

Cadcorp, the developer of the popular Cadcorp SIS – Spatial Information System range of GIS software is now shipping Cadcorp SIS V6.1.

Cadcorp SIS V6.1 is the latest version of an integrated line of GIS products first introduced to the market in 1995. The Cadcorp SIS product suite includes desktop, Web and developer software offerings. All originate from one single source code base guaranteeing across the board product compatibility. The design and scope of the new V6.1 release reflects the implementation of a number of user requested additions, a number of new product releases and the incorporation of additional OGC certified compliant interfaces.

Product range structure – new products: Map Reader, Map Browser and GeognoSIS.NET

The established product mix of Cadcorp SIS 'off the shelf' modules, namely: Map Viewer, Map Manager, Map Editor and Map Modeller remain. However, Map Reader, a new, entry level, free GIS viewer joins the desktop line-up. Map Reader allows you to display and print all formats supported by Cadcorp SIS that have been previously saved to a Published Window Definition (PWD) file in the higher level Map Manager, Map Editor or Map Modeller products.

The ActiveX based Control Development Modules (CDM) runtime equivalents for Map Viewer, Map Manager and Map Modeller will also continue to be offered for third party developers keen to embed SIS capability into their applications using the Cadcorp SIS Software Developers Kit (SDK).

The Cadcorp SIS Active Server Component (ASC), designed for the Microsoft Information Service ASP environment and implemented widely around the world, is now joined by GeognoSIS.NET. This new product extends the dynamic functionality of Cadcorp SIS for use over the Internet or a company-wide intranet utilising the .NET development environment, or other HTTP- and SOAP-based languages, such as Java. It can be deployed in a multiple server, multiple server architecture and operating system setting.

Cadcorp has also introduced a free desktop OGC Web services viewer product called Cadcorp SIS Map Browser. This is designed to view and query data served via WMS and WFS specifications, as well as GML 2.1.2 and Web Map Context XML data sources. Together with Cadcorp SIS Map Server, (which is bundled free with all Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller licences), this represents an end-to-end OGC-standards based Internet and Intranet solution that can be deployed at no extra cost to Map Modeller licencees.

Cadcorp apSIS, the Microsoft COM based developer kit and Cadcorp mSIS, the mobile data collection application also remain in the V6.1 product line-up.

OpenGIS conformance

Cadcorp has been an OpenGIS Technical Committee member since 1997. Cadcorp SIS remains the world leading GIS product family in terms of OpenGIS compliance, (see www.opengeospatial.org). Cadcorp holds OGC compliant certificates for Simple Features, Grid Coverages, Coordinate Transformation and Geospatial Web Services. Specifically these standards are the SFO 1.1, CTO 1.0, GC 1.0, WMS 1.1.1 & WFS 1.0.0 interfaces. All these certified implementations are an integral part of Cadcorp SIS V6.1 across the board. Newly released Map Browser is aimed squarely at being an OpenGIS dedicated Web Services client, but the capabilities found within Map Browser are also shared by the other Cadcorp SIS desktop, developer and Web software products.

Cadcorp SIS V6.1 desktop software now also features a dedicated Wizard for the loading of OpenGIS data types.

New product highlights

Cadcorp SIS users have already come to know and rely on:

  • native support of over 100 graphic and database formats ‘out-of-the-box’
  • a single source code base from desktop to Web
  • seamless product integration across the product range
  • flexible and powerful GIS query capabilities
  • no recourse to middleware to interact with databases
  • data analysis and editing tools
  • industry leading OpenGIS conformance
  • easy to use, step-by-step Wizards for many operations
  • MapTips that display item attributes
  • the Roamer ‘magnifying glass’ tool

Cadcorp SIS V6.1 now introduces highlights such as Douglas-Peucker based line-generalisation, increased text handling flexibility including outline (halo) text, updates and enhancements to TIN generation options and speed, enhanced route generation and more flexible object decomposition. Raster transparency commands have been added to assist the improved viewing of data overlays (layers). The Positional Accuracy Improvement (PAI) Manager joins the OS MasterMap Data Loader as a new, free software tool supplied with Map Modeller. In addition, a dedicated Wizard for the loading of OS data features as standard within Cadcorp SIS desktop software range. This offers Ordnance Survey GB users a one stop solution for OS digital data management.

Improved dataset capabilities include OS MasterMap support for ITN and Imagery layers. The ESRI BIL (Band Interleaved by Line) reader now supports BIP (Band Interleaved by Pixel) and BSQ (Band Sequential) layouts. A new MicroStation DGN V8 reader has been introduced. The SICAD reader has been expanded to support more types. A GDAL-based (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library) reader has been introduced which adds support for the following raster formats:

  • ARC/INFO ASCII Grid
  • ARC/INFO Binary Grid
  • Atlantis MFF Raster
  • Atlantis MFF2 (HKV) Raster
  • Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED)
  • ENVI .hdr Labelled
  • EOSAT FAST-L7A (Landsat TM)
  • Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) Release 4

  • USGS Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles (New Style)
  • USGS Optional ASCII DEM
  • USGS SDTS DEM

Further increasing the options for users of Geo-spatial enabled datastores, Cadcorp SIS V6.1 is also the first GIS software to offer PostGIS support. This is currently available as a separate download for Cadcorp SIS V6.1 users (www.cadcorp.com/resources_digital_mapping/free_stuff.htm).

Cadcorp SIS V6.1 is about many things. It is a testament to our ongoing commitment to the OGC and open systems in general. It embraces the major functionality requests made by our clients and it takes a position on the key technical developments facing our industry today” stated Mike O’Neil, Managing Director, Cadcorp. “V6.1 is more open in terms of those OGC interfaces and data formats supported. It is more flexible in terms of new commands, enhancements and data access options that can be drawn into the mix. Our actions to implement Web Services with a dedicated product like Map Browser, the widening of our users Web development and deployment options by releasing GeognoSIS.NET and the availability of PostGIS support, reflects the further realisation of our development objectives” he added.

About Cadcorp SIS

Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System - is a suite of Windows-based and Web-enabled end user and developer digital mapping and geographic information system (GIS) software products. The desktop suite comprises: Map Viewer, which provides support for over 100 graphic and data formats, thematic and hard copy; Map Manager, which provides the mainstream user the ability to view, explore, query, symbolise and print digital map and associated tabular data; Map Editor, which in addition to the facilities provided by Map Manager, provides the GIS data custodian with tools to view, manage and edit map and tabular data; and Map Modeller, which adds 3D modelling, terrain analysis and several thematic and analytic mapping tools.

ActiveX based developer toolkits and Viewer, Manager and Modeller based runtime licences are popular products for the development and implementation of bespoke applications by third parties that take advantage of Cadcorp's GIS expertise.
