Cadcorp SIS V6

Cadcorp SIS V6 is the latest version of an integrated line of GIS products first introduced to the market in 1995. As before, the Cadcorp SIS product suite will cover desktop, Web and developer offerings. All will originate from one single installed executable guaranteeing across the board product compatibility.

Product range structure

The established product mix of Cadcorp SIS 'off the shelf' modules, namely: Map Viewer, Map Manager, Map Editor and Map Modeller remain.

Owing to their great success, the ActiveX modules for Map Viewer, Map Manager and Map Modeller will also continue as runtime platforms for third party developers keen to embed SIS capability into their applications using the Cadcorp SIS Software Developers Kit (SDK).

The Cadcorp SIS Active Server Component (ASC) has been implemented widely around the world, including installations for Factory Mutual Global, Ernst & Young, Medway Council and Belgian utility company WVEM. This flagship Web product stays in the Cadcorp SIS inventory.

OpenGIS conformance

By acting as a leading player on the OpenGIS Technical Committee, Cadcorp SIS is the only GIS product family in the world which is OpenGIS certified conformant for Simple Features (vector data) Coordinate Transformation, and Grid Coverages (raster) across the board. Recently obtained OpenGIS certification for OLE-DB Provider has been added to V6 along with the OpenGIS raster data interface (Grid Coverages) and support for the Web Mapping Server (raster), Web Feature Server (vector), Web Terrain Server (3D data).

New product highlights

Highlights of Cadcorp SIS V6 include continuous panning, allowing a smooth rolling scroll from one data view to another, support for Active Data Objects (ADO), a slick new database connection wizard to streamline database connectivity and the support for user defined ‘plug-in’ gazetteers. Furthermore users can now input and output user defined naming conventions for Index Datasets. This means for one, that any datum changes experienced over time can be accommodated in Cadcorp SIS.

New dataset capabilities include improved support for Oracle 9i data stored in the object relational model, the German transfer format EDBS, a GML 2 plugin dataset enabling support for reading the new OS MasterMap data from Ordnance Survey, an updated ECW plugin to support ER Mapper Image Web Server, S57 - the hydrographic charting standard, updated SHP file support, and the popular raster formats TIFF LZW and GIF. In addition, a new datasource to allow data to be loaded into Cadcorp SIS using the Feature Manipulation Engine from Safe Software (FME) has been added to cover other formats not directly supported by Cadcorp.

OS MasterMap and NLUD

Significantly for UK users, Cadcorp now offers OS MasterMap solutions (see cover story) and an officially certified product that creates and links land parcels (called polygons) to the National Land Use Database (NLUD) Land and Property Gazetteer (LPG) database, it populates the database and land parcels with several compulsory fields of descriptive information. It also exports to NLUD specified data formats and validates the data entry exercise. Cadcorp was the second GIS company in the market to receive NLUD accreditation.

Martin Daly, Technical Director, Cadcorp states, “Many of the long established fundamentals of Cadcorp SIS software enjoyed over the years such as common product interfaces, product integration, map reprojection on the fly, command transparency, data integration, dynamic map layout rotation, snap-to features and many others have become part of a bandwagon that larger, less manoeuverable vendors, have now sought to jump onto. This confirms that Cadcorp SIS has been at the forefront of GIS software development and the adoption of OpenGIS standards; it is our intention that it will remain so”.

Cadcorp apSIS

Cadcorp apSIS - applications for SIS, is a suite of programmable Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) objects and controls, which gives the developer the capability to add mapping and GIS capabilities to their bespoke applications. Competitor products include ESRI’s Map Objects and Mapinfo’s MapX.

At the heart of the Cadcorp apSIS Software Developer Kit (SDK) is the apSIS ActiveX control. The control and apSIS COM objects provide sophisticated 'geo-spatial' functionality in the Windows environment.

Because the apSIS SDK has a comprehensive Application Programming Interface (API), developers can get at exactly the functionality they require in order to build bespoke, or embedded, GIS applications.

Cadcorp apSIS has received extensive OpenGIS conformance which reinforces the fact that apSIS developers are using the most pioneering, inter-operable GIS tool kit in the market.

apSIS offers:

  • Extensive Co-ordinate System support
  • Support for multiple vector, raster and database formats, including Ordnance Survey NTF and Cadcorp OS MasterMap database support as standard
  • Data creation and editing
  • Thematic mapping and visualisation
  • Scaleable 'thin-client' applications for your enterprise
  • Comprehensive support files and documentation
  • Pioneering OpenGIS conformance

Cadcorp mSIS

Cadcorp mSIS- mobile Spatial Information System, is an easy to use data capture application for the Pocket PC platform. It is supplied in two parts, a desktop based project management package - mSIS Office, plus the Pocket PC based data capture software - mSIS Mobile.

Cadcorp recognises that data capture should be quick, easy, accurate and consistent. The Cadcorp approach offers project managers the ability to define and control projects effectively from their desktop and give field operatives a Pocket PC tool for swift, structured data collection with both freely placed and GPS input graphic features.

Cadcorp also recognises that mSIS customers will include existing users of Cadcorp SIS as well as users of other GIS packages. Support for various formats in mSIS creates such versatility.

mSIS supports a number of native File Formats including Cadcorp SDS, ESRI SHP and Ordnance Survey (GB) NTF, plus various Raster Formats including GeoTiff, TIFF, BMP, GIF and JPEG. Data is easily downloaded and uploaded from desktop to Pocket PC.

Project management tasks requires the set-up of many parameters, These include choosing the right base data, configuring the appearance of overlays, setting the spatial reference system and building simple User Interfaces for Data Input. All these GIS functions are easily achieved and ported using the mSIS Office package.

Sporting the look and feel of the popular Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System software, mSIS Office is ideal for software users familiar with Cadcorp SIS as well as GIS newcomers who can be introduced to the highly regarded Cadcorp interface layout.

Pocket PC devices are small yet increasingly powerful. Onboard processors rival clock speeds of desktop PCs from five years ago, memory sizes of more recent PC vintages, excellent colour displays that can be read even in bright light, easy expansion, linkage to GPS receivers, mobile telecommunications and desktop PCs using either card slots and serial, USB or infrared ports. Easily fitted, protective cases for off-the-shelf models add to their flexibility.

Cadcorp mSIS on the Pocket PC allows the user to view geo-spatial data, to create and edit vector geometry such as points, lines, polygons, circles and rectangles, as well as define data attributes. mSIS will link to any GPS receiver which supports NMEA 0183 formatted GPS messages, and create GPS point, line and area vectors.
