Cadcorp SIS will provide desktop and Web-based GIS facilities to help council deliver its business and strategic objectives.    Press Release, Stevenage, 21 July 2005

Digital mapping and geographic information systems software developer Cadcorp has announced that Tamworth Borough Council, in the heart of England, has selected Cadcorp SIS - Spatial Information System – as the basis of its new corporate GIS.

Cadcorp will deliver and assist the council in the implementation of Cadcorp SIS Map Modeller for managing and deploying OS MasterMap data and Cadcorp SIS Map Editor for creating, maintaining and editing spatial data. In addition, Cadcorp will supply Cadcorp GeognoSIS.NET, which allows the functionality of Cadcorp SIS to be accessed over the Internet and/or a corporate intranet.

“After going through our standard software selection processes, we selected Cadcorp SIS because of its openness, provided by Cadcorp’s implementation of the Open Geospatial Consortium’s (OGC)® interface specifications and the software’s ability to directly read and display a very wide range of other data formats, on-the-fly. We were also impressed by Cadcorp’s willingness to cooperate with Tamworth BC’s other software providers,” said Jon McDevitt, GIS/LLPG officer, Tamworth Borough Council. “Furthermore, it offered the council good value for money,” he added.

In the first instance, Cadcorp SIS will be used by Tamworth Borough Council in its Environmental Protection department to analyse sites for potentially contaminated land and later, to also map noise and manage air quality. It will also be used in Planning to analyse constraints affecting development control and in managing policies in the Local Plan. The council also expects to extend the system to other departments and to create a link between Cadcorp SIS and the council’s CRM system in order to improve service delivery.

Among the benefits the council will get from the deployment of its new Cadcorp SIS-based GIS are the ability of both front-line and back office staff to respond to queries more effectively, the ability to analyse location-based information to support strategic decision-making in ways which would otherwise be impossible, the capacity to allow citizens to ‘self-serve’ using geographic information over the Internet, and the removal of any ambiguity in the council’s spatial assets and inventories through the use of single, definitive datasets available to all via the council’s intranet and extranet.

“We are delighted that Tamworth Borough Council has selected Cadcorp SIS software on which to develop its GIS,” said Mike O’Neil, managing director, Cadcorp. “We look forward to working with them to help them develop the system and to achieve their business and strategic aims.”

About Tamworth Borough Council

Tamworth Borough Council is responsible for planning, regeneration and community development, environmental and community safety, housing and licensing issues on behalf of the people who live in the Borough of Tamworth. Located in the centre of England, 15 miles north-east of Birmingham, the Borough of Tamworth lies on the confluence of the rivers Tame and Anker, has a population of 75,000 and covers an area of 12 square miles.

Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850), who was twice Prime Minister of Great Britain and created London’s Metropolitan Police Force (colloquially known as Bobbies), came from Tamworth. The town is steeped in history. Known at the time as Tomtun, Tamworth was the capital of the Saxon kingdom of Mercia and in the 8th century King Offa had his palace there. Tamworth still has a Norman motte and bailey castle, with many later additions, including a fine late medieval banqueting hall. The town also offers a wide range of modern business and leisure facilities, including Europe’s first indoor real-snow ski slope.
